The Chocolate War - Courage in the Face of Adversity

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”
                                                                                      --Ambrose Redmoon

In The Chocolate War, Jerry is given an assignment by the Vigils, the not-so-secret society at his school.  Although he is given a choice to accept the assignment, he is not really able to refuse.  Or is he?  Can Jerry refuse to do the assignment given to him?  In your experiences as a high school student, can students refuse to do things when told by a group?  Is peer pressure so great that students feel that they have no other choice?  Jerry is not selling chocolates because the Vigils told him not to.  Is negative peer pressure such a big issue for students?
Your assignment is to respond to the above prompt.  You must write a well developed paragraph consisting of at least 10 sentences.  Please make sure that you use correct grammar, proper punctuation, and common sense in your response.  Once you write your response, you must respond to at least two classmates.  Make sure that you include your first name and last initial in your posting and that you tell which classmate you are responding to.  If your posting is deemed to be inappropriate, it will be removed, and you will not receive credit.

  2. I think that Jerry could have refused to do the assignment.Just because someone tells you to do something doesn't mean that u have to do it. It is possible for students to refuse to do things when told by a group. The student just has to be strong enough to say no, and to not be effected by what other people think of them. For me peer pressure doesn't have that great of an influence on me, but i can't speak for other people. Some people only go off of what people think of them or more so what they want them to think of them.I personally think that everyone is an individual, everyone is different. Although students try to be so much like other people and what they think is cool that they lose themselves in the "popular" crowd. I would rather be "lame" to other people and be myself than to be popular and be just like everyone else.

  3. I believe Jerry can't refuse to do his assignment only because it was assigned at school. At my school ( Griffin High ) i can't refuse to do it but if i choose not to i have to deal with bad consequences. At school you are assigned to do something, you should do it NO QUESTIONS ASKED! But, kids these days dont know how to be respectful and obedient. So, i'd rather not refuse and just get it over with. Now a day peer pressure has increased to a higher level only because kids are experiencing more in this world and want their friends to try it, why i say peer pressure is so great in high schools now? Because, everybody tries to fit in now a days so they feel like they have no choice. Negative peer pressure isn't a big issue in ( 2011) because nobody stress it to us young teenagers enough. They talk about it but thats not helping because it goes in one ear and come out the other. Me as in myself knows what's negative and whats positive so i dont get myself into those situations. But, me seeing it from other classmate they don't act like its a HUGE issue.

  4. Yes i belive that sutdents should be able to say no to a group.Because you don't know what can happen being with the wrong crowd.Somebody could tell you to smoke so weed you say no but because of peer pressure you do it anyway.Next thing you know you guys get caught an all y'all get in trouble an could go to jail for making a dumb decision.Their are lots people that don't want you to exceed in life so they try to get get you to do the wrong things instead of the rights things. Now these days people are droping out an not caring about school. They don't have a parent with them to tell them wrong from right. They try to bring down other students an make them just like them. Therefore the reason students act the way they act.To sum it all up I belive that you should be able to say no to a group that is peer prussuring you.

  6. I believe it is possible for students to refuse an assignment, or offer, to a group but it is often harder. Almost every person wants to have friends and "fit in", whether it be an adult or a high school student. Peer pressure is a hard thing to ignore, and everyone will or has experienced peer pressure at some point of their life. One of the questions was "Can students refuse to do things when told by a group?", well I believe that it is possible to refuse but sometimes the more people trying to persuade a person, the harder it is to accept or decline an offer. Many people feel intimidated by large groups when they are approached with no around; so therefor it is a lot harder to give your honest opinion. Peer pressure is an on going thing, and will most likely never come to an end; so all we can do is try our best to avoid it, and live our lives the way we want, and not how everyone else wants. In Jerry's case he is told by the Vigils not to sell the chocolate. Jerry is in high school and like every teenager he wants to fit in or do what his peers want him to do. Even though he may feel like he should be selling the chocolate he does not because it he was told not too. The pressure of someone asking you to do something can be very over whelming, and that is why most teens do what everyone else wants them to do.

  7. No he really dont have to do the assignment because he is told by someone that is around the same age as him. It deepends on what kind of group it is and who you are being told by and and if its some students and yall are working together and told by a teacher i think you should do it.And i would not let no one peer purssre me to the point that they make me do something that i dont want to because no everything is right sometimes when you listen to what your friends and other students you may lead you to doin the wrong thing but always go with your first choice its up to your choice what you do and who you listen to but listening to everybody can get you in a whole lot of trouble. sometimes you make mistakes you cant get out out when you listen to people and let them tell you the wrong thing but i really dont think its fair to the they peer pressure him so that he cant sale his chocolate Deionte L:

  8. @Saajidah I agree with what you are saying i'd rather be lame than fit in also. Everybody was born an individual so they should act as if they are individual.

  10. In the chocalate way Jerry is pressured by a group of his peers to sell chocolate. He wants to sell the chocolate because he wants to fit in with everyone else. Even though he is pressured and wants to fit in he stands out and does not sell the chocolate because he is told not to. I believe it is very possible for us students to refuse to do things when told by a group. Depending on what kind of person you are it can be very hard to do so or it can be very easy to do so.In my opinion most high school students give in to the negative peer pressure to fit in with their friends. Negative peer pressure is a pretty big issue for us students. Most high school students give into the negative peer pressure but there are some students who don't and go on about there business. Some students think peer pressure is very hard and they just give in to everything there pressured about. Then again some students think it is very easy to just walk away when peer pressured by a gruop or an individual. In my opinion i think it is hard to refuse peer pressure by a group but it is very posssible to refuse and walk away.

  11. Saajidah, I agree with your statement, about how it is possible to say no to what everyone else wants, but many students feel intimidated by the "popular crowd" and will do anything to make them happy. I believe that I can say no to peer pressure, but as we see everyday, many people have trouble refusing an offer.

  12. Well starting off with this, this book is very entertaining. This book will knock you off your feet, its the most dramtic and young teenage book ever. Its a great choice for young teenage kids in high school. It will teach the about some of the lessons and obstacles you will have to go through in life. It will also show how your friends will change on you and how you will have to earn trust. And how trust is the key to the path of the way you want to live your life. I suggest this to all high school stdents that're still growing up.

  15. in this book, jerry plays as a young teenage boy who is not liked by everyone. People pressure him to do things he doesnt always want to do. this book will show you that when a group of people tell you to do something you should not get pressured into it. in my personal opinion this book is a great book, it shows the life of a teenage boy and how hard it is sometimes to grow up, it shows the life of a teenage boy who just wants to be liked, and nobody will give him the love and friendship he needs. Jerry just wants a few friends, and the few friends he does have pressure him into things he doesnt always want to do. it will show the obstacles of growing up into a young adult. I suggest this book to all teenage kids in high school that are growing up.

  25. Javon, I both agree and disagree with your statement. I believe it is possible to say no to peer pressure, and just saying "no!" is the right thing to do, but I do not agree with the fact that people pressure others to see them fail. I think that peer pressure occurs because no one wants to be alone. For example, Bob is going to a party but does not want to go alone, he may pressure Lindy to go with him, even though he knows she is not allowed to go to parties after 10.

  27. Quan D; I think no because he should be able to make his choice.Just because someone tells you you have to do something that doesn't mean you have to do it.It is harder for you to say no because you have people telling you to do it.If you don't do it you will think that people will think that you are not cool and other stuff. This book will teach you how to make hard decisionin school and in life. Some students think that peer pressure is had to dell with you have people to tell you to do it and you have people to tell you not to do it.

  28. i think that Jerry has the decision if he wants to do the assignment the teacher assigned to him. When you are in school or even out of school and someone tells you to do something you have the choice if you want to do it or not. i think its up to you if your gonna make the right choice to do it or not. i think that Jerry is making the right choice to do the assignment because he knows the consequences of his reactions. i believe there is good peer pressure and there is also bad and everyone is smart enough to know right from wrong and whether they should do it or not.Jerry is getting pressured not to sale the chocolate and Jerry is makeing the right decision by saling the choclate because its no one elses choice. everyone has to make choices in life and they get confused on if its right or wrong but you still have to do whats best and see what that decision is gonna do for you in the future.

  29. I think Jerry had a choice whether or not to do this task. I say that because he doesn't need to that an assignment from teenagers. I thinf he was also suffering from peer presure. When your in high school you have to go with a lot of peer pressure.

  30. Okay, We All Know Everyone Has Choices . Jerry Has A Choice; He Doesn't Have Too Listen Too The Group That Gave Him The Assignment . Oh, And Yes, Student Have The Right Too Refuse When They Feel Like That's Something They Shouldn't Do; Or If It's Something That They Know They May Get In Trouble For . Some Students Do Give In Too Peer Pressure Because They May Feel Like They Won't Be Liked In That One Particualar Group . Some Students Just Want Too Fit In; Most Of Them Realize That They Made A Dumb Decision And They Regret It . I've Noticed That Negative Peer Pressure Is An Extremely Big Deal For Some Students; They End Up Making The Wrong Decision That Could Or May Mess Up Their Careers Or Goals. This Is Why Students Shouldn't Listen Too Peer Pressure It's Not Worth Their Goals And Dreams Too Be Ruined Beacuse Of Peer Pressure. We've All Got Choices.

  31. I think jerry has a choice to do the assignment because nobody didnt put a gun to his head and say "you better do the assignment". The choice is really his.Peer pressure can be a whole lot when you dont no what to do. All you hear is people tellin you what to do. You never have the authority to do what you want to do. In school people can refuse to do the assignment given to them, but there are going to be conseguences, and usually the teachers win. I also think that negative peer pressure is a big issue for students. Especially if they are new to the game or the population. I think peer pressure is so great students really believe that have have no other choice. All he have to do is believe what is right in your heart. Thats is my response to this prompt

  32. First off, everyone has a choice on whether they want to do something. So therefor I think Jerry has a choice to turn down the assignment or not. With my experience as a highschool student I think it varies on what type of group you are. For example, if your hanging with the wrong crowd of course you have a choice to do something or not. But if its some thing for a grade then i think you sohuld do it. I think peer pressure is powerful enogh to make someone do something they really don't want to do. At the end of the day all they person wants to be is popular. I 5think negative peer is a major issue for teens today.

  38. I think no,because really he dont have to do the assignment because he have been given the assigment by someone that not older then him and that not a teacher. It depend if a teacher put them in a group and been ask to do the work and she say every one should have something to and they pick what they want going to do and they have to do it.i think it great beacuse the teacher want them to make something out of thereself and they trying to get them ready for the real world.I say yes beacuse many people dont like for someone to get smart with them and they did not get smart with whom every got smart with them. you shouldn't never give negative peer pressure. The reason i say that because why give negative thing you should always help someone even when you dont like that preson.negative peer pressure is a issue to students beacuse it want help them in real life.why give negative peer pressure for any way. you should think about it. what if that was you.
