Intellectual Freedom Manual, 7th edition
Almost since the first book was published, there were people saying that the content was inappropriate for certain audiences. Children's books have been banned as have books normally taught as part of courses in schools across the country. Is this right? Necessary? Permissible?
- Does intellectual freedom exist in our society?
- Should it exist?
- Does anyone have the right to restrict what we read? Write? Draw?
- When did it become okay for someone else to tell you that you cannot read something that is of interest to you.
- As a student, should you be able to read what you want?
Your assignment is to post your thoughts on the questions posed above. You will need to fully explain your answers in two well written paragraphs. Each paragraph must be at least 5 sentences. You will also need to respond to at least two of your classmates. If you do not follow the rules regarding blog posting, your post will be removed, and you will not receive credit for this assignment.

ReplyDeletei feel like it isnt right because people shouldnt be held from reading book about any subject. Its also not neccesary in my opinion , and can be permissible . i dont know what intellectual freedom so i cant say it exis or not. And from the definition of it i dont think it should be existed. i Feel like nobody should restrict what i read and come behind it and say "reading increases the knowledge" but at the same time young teen students like me isnt going to read a boring book. i understand that people wouldnt want to there child read such books with gang violence, sex &, racism but at the same times it going to be heard in there ears one day. It never became okay to me to let someone tell me what not to read that is interesting to me. If im reading the book im pretty sure ive already heard about it or know about it. If my mother thinks it okay for me to read i feel like its okay to read. As a student i should be able to read what i want. my teachers always told me "reading increase the knowledge" so i should be able to read what i want.

Intellectual freedom is everywhere in our society.It always has and always will be.I say this because the two essential(mentioned above) says that everyone has to have the right to hold any belief on any sublect and to convey their ideas, no if you look at this everyone does this whether it is religious or political.The second is that society makes an equal commitement to their right.
ReplyDeleteI think that intellectual freedom should exists because you are entitled to your opinion and that everyone cannot live off of what one person thinks or suggests everyone would be chaotic.
People occasionly shoould have the right to restrict what we read,write,or draw because if we are reading somthing that is not suitable for the situation that is going on then they should have the right to tell us what to do,and if we are drawing somthing that may be offensive to someone then we shouldnt do it.Also the same thing with what we write because some peoplemight take things as well as others so we need to be careful what we write about.
It never became ok if someone told us what not to read if we like it because they are not the ones reading it.And if we like it then we should be able to read it.
As a student i think that we should be able to read what ever we want as long as it is suitable for the situation.
In my opinion i agree and i also disagree with intellectual freedom.Intellectual freedom has always been in our society and it will always be. I do believe that everyone has the right to hold any belief on any subject, everyone uses intellectual freedom.Our society should have the right the restrict what we read,write and draw. This is because you have to think about our society and the way it is. No child is raised in the same way. Some children may of been raised in a way to where their suitable to read other things that other children were not raised suitable to read. I also believe that we should have the right to read,write and draw what ever we would like. This is because once a child gets to the age to where they know what is suitable and what is not suitable for them to read,write, and draw, they will only read what they are suitable to read,write and draw. Then on the other hand as for the the younger generation they don't know what is suitable and whats not suitable for them to read,write and draw so therefore there should be a restriction on intellectual freedom.

I belive that it does to certain sitation.In some cases intellectual does exist with religion.There is a man trying to run for president an is a mormons.Diffrent people think he shouldn't be a president cause he is a mormons.People are thinking its a cult.Certain people think he shouldn't be president because of intellectual freedom.there are there lots of people that have there intellectual views against him.People protest their intellectual views against abortions.They protest their intellectual views because they belive they have the same views as the bible.As a student I belive that everyone shouldn't be intellectual because of their religion

No intellectual should not exist because it can effect many diffrent people.So people who have diffrent religion will be affected because what they belive in.Diffrent races will be affect because of what they do an how they dress.The Poor an the rich will be intellectual because of what the have an what they don't have.People that are diffrent ages are intellectual of what they do at a young age an what they do at a old age.students at Griffin High want to keep the band while others don't.Losts of people are protesting from letting books being banned.Audults think students need more classes an less lunch time.To put it all together I think it shouldn't exist.

I say this because as the first essential condition says that all individuals have the right to hold any belief on any subject and to convey their ideas in any form they deem appropriate. I think in some occasions it is right for people to restrict what we read,write,or draw because if were reading something that is not appropriate then an adult should be able to tell us to choose another book. In our reading and drawing it may offend people on what we write about or if we draw something and someone else thinks it was racist then we should not draw it or write it. I think it is only okay for someone to tell us what we cannot read if it is in our interest is if its not appropriate for school or for an assignment. But other then that I think we should be able to read whatever we want if it's in our interest. As a student I think that we should be able to read what we want whenever we want. The only reason I say this is because as we get older were gonna have to read higher level books and are gonna learn about the different things that happen in the past,present, and maybe future. I belive that nobody should be able to say what we read,draw,and write.Cause when you get in the adulthood you will want to take things from people such as minors.Some an examples would be a first grader learns to write at school but when he comes home his mother tells him your not going to be writing in my house.When the first grader goes back to school an tells his teacher he is not aloud to write at home.The teacher makes a confernce with the parent an says she doesn't want her child learning how to write.Instead of writing the child learns how to draw an his mother doesn't let him do that either.When as the child got older he didn't know anything about the real world. on how to read or write even draw.He just was a adult that couldn't do anything all cause his mother took that away from him.To put it all together I belive that nobody should take away your ability to read,write,and draw.

It never became okay to tell me as a student I can't read something.Because I feel like that you are trying to hide or keep something from me.I think it could be something real important kept away from me.An exmpale is I get a letter in the mail saying I get the job report to work monday.Your sister jill didn't get the job so she is so angry she hide your letter. You ask her everyday did you get any mail about the job.Your sister leaves the house one day you look around an you find your job letter sitting under books.Then when she comes home an you show her the letter she says she doesn't know anything about it.To put it all together I think you shouldn't keep someone from reading something.

Javon on your last post i agree because i also think that you should't keep someone from reading something because if the person who is hiding something from us knows that we are suitable to read what they are hiding then it should't be kept from us.

Kermeshia B i also agree with you because i was saying the same thing if a child grows up to where there suitable to read something and they know it is ok by their parents then as a teen in school at high school age you should already be mature enough to know weather or not your suitable to read,write or draw something.They should honestly leave it up to you.

As a student yes you should be able to read what you want to.Because reading can make you a better reader.You can learn new words you never knew before.When being a student you can read to other students an make them a better reader.Then when you get older it can help you in the long run.When reading what you want make you want to read more.When your not reading what you want you become less interesting.You can learn about diffrent culturals,and religion.Also learn about your health.Parents you not hide book from students cause they won't know what the real world is like.As a students feel like we should be able to read what we want.

I believe that society as a whole should not be able to determine what any persons reads, writes, watches, draws, etc. but it is a parents job to monitor what they believe their child should or should not be exposed to. Everyone has the right to their own belief and concerns but I believe when society goes as far trying to stop or banned others from viewing things then society is going against our bill of rights, which says Freedon of Speech is a right given to every person as an individual. When we as a group try to control what other are or are not allowed to exposed to then we are being stubborn and not thinking of how others may feel toward something. I as a student believe that I am mature enough to pick up any book in this world, read it, and handle it without going against any laws. If I am interested in a book then I will find a way to read it. People are interested by things they are already surrounded by. Whether something is banned or not it will not make a difference in how a person's mind set nor behavior.

Kayla C. I disagree with you saying that society should be able to put a banned or limit to what children can or cannot read, write, or draw. I believe that responsiblity goes to the childs parent. If society starts making all the rules then parents will have no say so in what their children can or cannot do. You said yourself that people are raised differently, so one child may be able to handle a book with restricted things in it as another child may not be able to handle the book, but should the child who is mature enough to handle the book be punished and limited for what another child can not handle?

I dont believe intellectual freedom exsist in our society , because if so then books wouldnt be banned. We were all given the freedom of speech so why are we limited on what we can read , say , draw and write? Intellectual freedom should most defiantly exsist. By having the right to unrestricted information and speaking our mind with no limatations who knows what cure we could find ? Or what new invention we could design ? No, noone has the right over me . If i want to read something ill find it , if i want to write something or draw something i will . Its simply my right as an american "freedom of speech" i was given that and so were you all . It was never okay for someone to say you cant read something your interested in. Thats why the world is so messed up now , all the restrictions . Okay , yes some restrictions are appropriate . But to ban a book because it has a little sex in it or a few curse words ? Come on now listen to a few songs on the radio or watch some movies now a days . Why dont they ban those ? Because its all about money and having a lot of it . As a student especially high school aged you should be able to read what you want . How else are we suppose to get a gist of the real world ? I don't think that intellectual freedom is good for our environment. I say that because its redicuous that kids can be able to read what they want to read. Like some of the banned book, shouldn't be banned from us. For example; the Harry Porter books are banned? WHY? Thaa's just cheap entainment. That is something that should be able to be read. the only books that I don't thinkshould be read( unless your 10 and older) are books about sex and viloence. So I think that any book is good for mordal eyes. Thats the way I feel about it.

I think that it is not neccassary to ban books. We are all intitled to opinions, that is true. However, we are young adults and if a book is boring we aren't going to read it. I think that we will here, read, or come across things that are inappropriate either way.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if we do not here about things in school, later in life we will. We as young adults need to be aware of situuations like these so we know how to handle them. We should always have the right to be ourselves, we need less shelter and more consideration about other points of view.
Denise, I agree completely with your opinion. Parents have the right to monitor and people have the right to there views.
Javon, as students we do have a right to read as we please, but parents are concerned about our attitudes after we read things like these.

ReplyDeleteI very strongly agree with your answer. I really think that banning books aren't going to stop us from saying the things we see in banned books. And even if we do say things that were not suppose to say I just think it's part of life.

i dont think its right to band books or anything from school or anywhere for students because weather or not its mean , nasty , or anything else the students can learn from it . This is possible because say for instint if ii were to read a book about racism and and killing people and i tried to go stab a white person because their white i would go to jail and IF i'm realeased i know then not to do it again its a lesson learned becuse its not cool being in jail . Some people dont learn ! book are a good way for comprhention and understanding no matter what it is , it helps you in some way and i would hope people dont try to do whats in books in real life , but if they do they WILL learn from that mistakee if its a bad thing . Bottom line is books shouldnt be banned because what they have in them because whats in them sometimes attract more readers and it helps people in a way , but i dont think books like this should be in ELEMENTARY schools !
ReplyDeleteAs a student at GHS i do think students should read what they want , simply because we are in high school and we SHOULD be mature enough to have oppurtunities like that. Even though some people aren't mature everyone shouldnt be punished for their actions . Some students actually like reading and if they go to the library and dont find the type of book they want because they banned it because of someone elses ignorants they want check out books . If there is a problem with this i at least think students or teachers should get permission from parents if they think their child should read thngs like this instead of just ban books .
