Please write your weekly blog in the space below. It is due by Friday, March 11, 2011 at 6:00 PM. This week's blog topic is Censorship. How do you feel about censorship? Do you think that the government should interfere with a person's right to read whatever they want? Do you think that parents should limit what their children read? Is censorship right or wrong? As a budding author, how do you feel about censorship? This is your opportunity to tell us exactly how you feel about censorship.
Please be mindful that this is a public forum. As such, you need to use polite language, correct grammar, and be respectful of the fact that someone may have an opinion that is different than yours. You will also need to respond to the posting of one other person in the class.

ReplyDeleteHonestly I don’t think the the governemnet should have the right to censor things. I think every should have a 100% choice to watch it if they want to. I do not agree with the government interfering with a person right to read whatever they want. If reading a certain book is what that person wants to do and it’s not harming anyone else then I think it is perfectly fine. I do in fact think parents need to limit what there kids read and watch at such as young age. Kids that are young are way to knowledged for there age. They are informed about things they shouldn’t even have a clue about until there atleast a teenager. I do think censorship is wrong though, which does infact contradict what I said about the parents limiting what there kids watch. This is because censorship is when something is suppresed by the governmnet or other controlling body. The controlling body is the parent, and I think they should suppress what there kids watch and that is censorship too. But in the conclusion I think parents need to watch what there young kids watch and I think censorship is wrong, it kinda goes against freedom of speech I would say.

ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that censorship is at times necessary. It may not always be desired, but it is sometimes essential. I don't think the government should always be able to censor what we read. But as our government, they have the right to do so, for the benifit of our country. Looking from such a broad perspective, it might be the most effective way to protect our country and its citizens. But it may not be that extreme, like top government secrets, but to even vulgar. Some things are just offensive, and it is exposing people to those types of things.
I think parents should limit what their child reads, because as a parent they have to chose whats appropriate for their children. While it is important, to allow your child to explore through books or television, it is significant that they arent over exposed, as well.
I believe that censorship is right, because if there is a need felt to censor it. It was obviously for an important reason. But there is an extent to were it goes from censoring the inappropriate things, to begin hiding things. Overall, I think that censorship is an effective way of controlling what things are being exposed to the community.

I agree that we should, but sometimes we give up our rights for the sakes of others. I understand what your saying about the freedom of speech. But I dont think it would, because We as US Citizens have the right to Freedom of Speech. But we lose that right as soon as it causes harm or distress to another person.

ReplyDeleteCensorship. This is honestly one of the most touchy topics there is to talk about. If you really feel that your child is going to change because of what they watch, listen to, or read, then your wrong. If you shelter your children from all of those things, they will more than likely go behind your back and do it anyway. So what's the point.
The government: another great one. There is no way on earth the government has room to be telling us what we can and cannot watch, read, or listen to. According to the media, they are worse then the regular citizens who don't hold office. Again with the "shelter" thing. Because they are in the media, they have to make sure they keep this perfect image. Some of them can't take the perfect image thing and they go behind the nation's. state's, or city's back and start doing stuff that they aren't supposed to. If they are trying to tell us what we can and cannot watch, read, or listen to, then they need to take a step back and look in the mirror first.

ReplyDelete@Grace:
I completely agree with the government aspect of your post - they should check themselves before dictating what we as citizens are exposed to. I agree somewhat with your stance on people changing based on what they watch, read, or listen to - sometimes I think they do and sometimes not, depending on the person. I think it reflects more on parenting than on the child, though.

ReplyDelete-- WELL, I had typed out my entire response about censorship and how it's a double-edged sword, and how a balance should be made between unlimited freedom for artistic reasons and the protection of our society's innocence. However, ironically enough, as soon as I clicked 'Post Comment' my lovely school computer decided to block, or censor, my response.
Thus, I have recently discovered a new opinion of censorship.
Censorship is dumb. They are suffocating those of us who don't wish to abuse our freedom. All too often have I been kept from doing appropriate activities for school due to their censorship on me.
I understand protecting children but this is too far. I spent my time typing about an eloquent response for this blog for absolutely no reason.
I'm sorry, but Damn Censorship. Let parents take responsibility rather than always blaming it on the government.
Please excuse the less than polite word in my last comment Ms. Fagin. I think my mind skimmed over that request of yours when reading. Sorry

ReplyDeleteFOR THE THIRD TIME... (attempts to post)
Censorship: A Word
Censorship is pointless and stupid. Now let me tell you why. If people choose to expose themselves to certain things - risk behaviors or otherwise - then they will, censorship or no censorship. If parents are especially concerned with what their kids are exposed to then maybe they should take Lil Wayne off their kid's iTunes playlist and start homeschooling their bundle of joy. People cuss. They talk about sex, drugs, and alcohol - there's only so much one can control about his or her own exposure. If parents believe exposure to certain things are going to cause their children to engage in risk behaviors, maybe they should re-evaluate their parenting.
Also, in reference to the government: Dear government, I rather like my first amendment right thank you very much, and I'd appreciate it if you were less concerned with what America is exposed. If you want to do what's in the best interest of Americans, balance the budget.

First of all your post made me smile, (:
I do agree with how the school computer censors ways to much. I mean personally I don't do things I am not supposed to. I mean if the kids in school want to do things other then work let them fail out of school. I do not think everyone should be censored and not allowed to see everything they need for school just because of other kids.
I agree the parents need to stop what kids want, not the government, because personally I think they take it to far sometimes.
@ Kaylee Tuggle,
ReplyDeleteFor starters I do feel your pain on how my thing did not want to post for some ungodly reason.
But let me continue with Mrs. Fagins project because I do need to finish this to pass this class(:
I do agree with how censorship is pointless. I think it should be the parenst choice on what the kids see and watch.
I do think if they censor what people do and say it does cover up a persons right to free speech slash press depending on where they write it at and where they choose to post it.
More or less I do agree with you and what you think.

ReplyDeleteGovernment censorship is not entirely idiotic. There is a point to it being there. Some things just shouldn't exist. Things that stretch the word 'acceptance' like child pornography should just be entirely censored out of our culture.
Otherwise I do agree with you in the fact that parents need to chill out a little because some exposure can't be prevented, and the government shouldn't hold this responsibility.

"Censorship is pointless and stupid"
To a point I agree with this but because there are those few crazy people who think that everything is real, or that just because someone in a book, movie, or TV show got away with something, they think that they can get away with it too. There is no point in censorship for the simple fact of we have freedom of speech but we still need it to an extent to protect others from those who would abuse this right if there was no censorship.
Kayla Brantley(=
ReplyDeleteOkay...censorship? Well let's see. I think that the government does have the right of censorship but they should only have the power of this to a certain degree. They have a right to stop certain people from writing and publishing things that if others read would cause anarchy; say a man goes and publishes a whole book series on a way to over throw the whole entire government and become a dictator, while HE might not actually be planning on doing that somebody else could come along and thing 'Hey, I could get away with this.' But they also don't have the right to censorship because we are promised the right to freedom of speech so if we can't use that right then why should we have it in the first place? But then there are those people who will go and think that because an actor, or a book character got away with something then they too could go and do that and get away with it too.
To an extent censorship is good but it also isn't good, it just depends on how you look at it.
To me censorship should be used in cetain ocassions when dealing with the safety of the American citizens. For instents what if terrerist were threatening our country? The governement should be able to keep that from us so as not to cause a panic. On the other hand it could be a problem. Because people may not know what is going on or we may not get the whole story on events.
ReplyDeleteI think the choice is really up to our governmet whether our information is censored or not.Because they are the people in charge and are soposed to do the right thing for the citizens, but if they censor our stuff to me it basically goes agianst what our govenment was founded on.
Parents should be able to censor what there child can read and see. I think its ok for this because there are somethings that kids of certian ages shouldnt be able to see. But in some cases i think parents are wrong to do it just because the writer or producer is not the same religion or ethinc group as them.

I like how you say censorship can be a good thing or not just by your point of view but everybody has there own opinion on what should be censored. Like some people might think its ok to censor there kids music choice no matter what there age is while others might think its ok for there 5 year olds to watch rated "R" movies. Also that if a person does decide to publish a book on how to over throw the government i think they should be able to publish it because it goes agianst our constitutional amendments. But if people actually tried that its there own desision and must not be happy with how our govenment is running our country and the people who try this will take the blame for their actions. And i highly think people who would actually try something they see from a movie or read in a book that is basically an impossible action for a person to do are people who are ignorant and dont need to be censored but need a good dose of common sense.
Davis to Kayla, i agree with what your saying. children cant be protected forever unless they embrace a life on a desserted island.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Nice job mentioning the budget.
Censorship is wrong. It’s illegal, unethical, and disrespectful. The Constitution clearly states that Americans have the right to write what they so chose, however the constitution can be altered and amended. One right, however, cannot ever be amended; the government can never remove freedom of expression. Men, women, and those who some would call children, have died for this right to say and write as we feel. Censorship would this most basic right based on opinion. As a result, the government would remove free thinking in the name of someone’s feelings. It wrong and I will never support such a thing. Regardless of legal status, people will always think, and no one can say that we cannot exercise this freedom. No one!

I Honestly dont think the government should get to censor what we can read or look at or up on the internet. Its our personal decision to look at it and if the government tries to hide it then people are just going to be disobedient and try to find loop holes. Just like people do with drugs. I do understand how somethings should be censored but it still wont matter because everyone has there own opinion on what can be censored and what shouldn't be. I dont like the fact that i cant look a picture of corn at school because it is blocked, what is so bad about corn. It also takes away the freedom of speech and the press.
ReplyDeleteTo grace,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with grace. Parents sheltering your kids is not going to stop them from doing wrong. Thats only going to make them rebel even more end the end. Just because you think your child is good does not mean they are. Just because they are shelter does not mean that they are blocked from all of the outside world. They will find it and it wont stop them.
But I dont completely agree with the whole perfect image of the government, yes they wont to seem perfect but i would not say censoring is there main idea on how to seem perfect i think they choose to censor things because the government wants to please people. More people want these things to be censored so thats what they do. Censor things to make people happy. The majority population.

ReplyDelete--> "If reading a certain book is what that person wants to do and it's not harming anyone else then I think it's perfectly fine. "
I completely agree with what you said. I believe that certain things may be censored but if it's a personal choice to read or watch something then it should be allowed. Reading or watching something in your own personal time for your own reasons is not harming anyone else. I think the only exceptions to this is young children. Though they may want to watch or read something for their own personal reasons, I don't believe young children are mature enough to make these types of decisions on their own. Other than that if teenagers and adults are mature enough to read or watch something uncensored they should with out a doubt be able to do so.
Let me start by defining censorship:
ReplyDeletean official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.
Now that you have a dictionary definition of censorship, is it okay for us to define morality?
No, because morality is subjective.
ReplyDelete-Kaylee
Concern with the distinction between good and evil or right and wrong; right or good conduct.
ReplyDeleteThe definition of morality but I don't think you really can actually decide if censorship is right or wrong because like morality, our opinions could be different, and right or wrong could be different ideas.

I personally think that he should have a choice of whether he wants to do the assignment or not. Because, he shouldn't have to do it if he really doesn't want to. And, plus if the teacher didn't say that it was mandatory then he really shouldn't feel obligated to do it anyways. because there was level of importance placed upon him doing the assignment so he shouldn't feel pressured to do it. and if there was a importance level placed on you doing the assignment then you will just have to face the consequences, cause at that you would've known that you had to do it and by you not doing it that would be failure to comply and you we be punished. So really it all boils down to 2 key things! Which are 1. If the teacher says that its mandatory for you to do the assignment.
ReplyDelete2. And if you feel like doing the assignment or not. So all in all its a personal decision on what you wanna do.
